Sergio Hurtado “El Fide” has a degree in visual arts from the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Baja California, Tijuana campus. He received the acquisition award of the XXIII Bienal Plastica de Baja California (2021) and the acquisition award of the 1st Sal\u00f3n de la Artes Visuales Elias + Fontes (2021). He has been part of multiple selections in biennials, art fairs and group exhibitions. His most recent solo exhibition is entitled Vida Ruina at Ediciones Caradura (Tijuana, 2023). He was also part of the group exhibition Index: Edicion Tijuana at Planta Libre (Mexicali, 2022). His work is developed mainly in the discipline of painting. He lives and works from the city of Tijuana, Mexico. <\/p>\n

My interest is to reinterpret social phenomena that arise in our daily lives and are disseminated through the media. In my series “Narco pop”, I explore the narcoculture in northwestern Mexico and now its global impact. Through music, fashion and social networks. <\/p>\n
For the realization of the pieces in this series, I combined techniques such as acrylic, transfer, sublimation and tufting. My proposal ranges from still lifes and genre scenes to textile portraits of famous people, such as capos, norte\u00f1o musicians and public figures killed by organized crime or accidents. I use a color palette that starts with red, symbolizing the blood spilled in this culture. The desaturation with white seeks to purify and generates pink tones that challenge the dominant macho and patriarchal aesthetic vision of the Mexican narco character. <\/p>\n
Finally, I continue to explore how my work transcends the traditional academic techniques that inspired this series. My artistic process has evolved significantly, moving from the delicacy of the brush on canvas to the intensity of a flurry of stitches cutting through the canvas. <\/p>\n
